Between 65 And Death

At my age 70, I definitely fall somewhere between the age of 65, and death.

I found this list of 21 life guidelines, and I wholly endorse all of them!

This resonates with me more than Desiderata.
(Many points are true for people of any age.)

Post Office Praise: Packages and Notifications

I like my Post Office box...

...for the extra services they offer, especially the two I discuss in this article.

I've had US post office boxes for over 3 decades. While I complain about the price doubling in the last 10 years, I'm not giving the box up. It's kinda neat, too, that I now have a 1-digit box number.

DNA Testing? Eureka!!

I had a Eureka!! moment last night, and it made a big difference in my views about DNA testing.

Eureka? Yes! This was the first time I had actually watched anyone use DNA results to do family research.

"Follow by Email"

On the sidebar to the right is an innocuous box that invites you to submit your email address.

When you do that, you will receive notifications delivered to that address when a new article has been posted to this blog!

FYI: "Cutting the cord" ~ 8 months later

"The Bloom Is Off The Rose."

My disenchantment does not come from "cutting the cord" and coming off cable TV. That was a good idea ~ and it is still a good idea.

My disappointment is with the app that Spectrum offers as a replacement.

FYI: Sharing Genealogy Research

I have been working with genealogy for well over a year and a half, and it's time to share what I've found.

My current interest started in 2017, when I bought a DNA test. I was curious about what I would discover, but I mostly bought it because it was on sale. 😎

Results from a DNA test do not come back for up to six weeks. I wanted to learn more about how to interpret/use DNA test results. While I was waiting, I discovered that Pinellas County, and the Largo Library in particular, had extensive genealogy resources.

Personal: Rick's Personality Test Results

The Anatomy of Love

Dr. Helen Fisher is a biological anthropologist who has studied components of "Love" and how to measure them. Her body of work goes back to the 1990's, and her career has generally been a continuation and refinement from that time.

Match.com ~ Dr. Fisher has been a consultant at Match.com for over a decade, and her personality tests provide input to Match members.

By the way, Fisher insists that Match is not a dating site: it is an introduction site.

In August 2019 I took the personality test at TheAnatomyofLove.com and I recorded the results below.

Personal: What is the difference between a friendship and a relationship?

Sex

That is the fast, easy, single-word, off-the-cuff answer to sum up the difference between a "relationship" and a "friendship."

The question is "what does the phrase 'friends with benefits' mean to me...?"

But wait...

FYI: Cutting the Cord - Summer Report

"Cutting The Cord" Lessons Learned

Previously on Rix Distillery:

  • Feb 15 - I Cut the Cord! - I was proud of myself for this step, and this article explains what steps I took.
  • Mar 16 - Update - I have learned how I can unlock archives from individual apps where I can revisit old episodes. Some with commercials; some with commercials. Life is good.
  • April 30 - Why Roku - Life is still good! In this article I reviewed my Roku device
  • Jun 29 - Oops! - The first hint that cutting the cord is not all I expected it to be. I discussed streaming apps available from Spectrum.

July 2019 - this post, however:...

Personal: Do you like my stories?

I realized that I really enjoy telling stories! This came to me as I was explaining to my son that I'm trying to make our family history interesting to him and his sons.

My interest in my family's genealogy is not for the research, but for what it tells me about people in the context of their time whether it's 20 years ago or 200 years ago..

FYI: ABCInc.biz Blog moved to ABCInc.pw

At the end of June, 2019, I bought the domain name ABCInc.PW

ABCInc.pw now points to my blog for a BetterComputer, Inc.
Jaggers.pw continues to point to my personal blog.

FYI: Opps! More Cutting the Cord

My TV world was good since I "cut the cord" 4 months ago.

My world was good until Tuesday, when Fox News went away.

I still had CNN, BayNews9, and a handful of other channels. But Fox was not longer available.

... I have just finished an hour on the phone tracking this down, and now I'd like to report what I've learned...

FYI: Create Space is Now Kindle Direct

In February, 2017, I posted an article about "Writing for CreateSpace." I talked about how easy it is (was) to publish through them.

I liked that CreateSpace was owned by Amazon, and everything published through them automatically appeared in Amazon within two days.

"The king is dead, long live the king!"

CreateSpace is now Kindle Direct Publishing.

FUN: OMG ~ Generational Cohorts !!??

Background: I was looking on Google for names of the different generations; specifically I was trying to name/identify people born before 1980. I quickly found that information.

In a nutshell, the Baby Boomer generation is generally considered to be people born 1946-1964. People born in the 15 years between 1965 and 1979 are identified as either Gen X (or Baby Bust).

But....

FYI: My Why I Chose Roku Devices

In February, 2019, I "cut the cord" by dropping my cable TV subscription and began using an Internet streaming device.
  • All TV broadcasts use digital signals, anyway
  • Video quality is the same whether decoded  by a cable box or a streaming device
  • Streaming devices are available from familiar names
    • Roku (stick, premier)
    • Amazon (Fire: stick & cube))
    • Google (Chromecast)
    • Apple TV
  • They all have HDMI connections/cables

I personally use Roku, and here's why...

Purely Personal: Dating and Companionship in 2019

Wow! The last time I wrote about being single was over six months ago.

I am a social person...

I continue to reflect on not sharing a home with another adult in a committed, monogamous and intimate relationship. I am also reflecting on what I have to do to make that happen. ("Dating" he says as he clears his throat. "cough, cough")

As 2019 rolled in, I have...

FYI: "Cutting the Cord" Follow-up

It's been a month since I returned my digital cable boxes and "cut the cord."

(I had written about it then)  ...and here's the next chapter 😊...

FYI: I Dropped Cable TV ~ AKA "Cutting the cord"

Here is my story about dropping Spectrum Cable TV!

I cut the cable but I can still watch more TV than I have time for.

And... I'm saving over $100 per month!!!

Here is what I am now paying:
  • $51/mo for 100mps Internet
    • I have over 50% more Internet speed
    • The hardware (modem/router) is included.
  • $23/mo for Spectrum TV app
    • I have my BayNews9 channel.
    • I have local broadcast stations with no need for an external antenna.
